I thought I knew it way before coming here, but Americans are OPEN MINDED. The terms I learned after coming to Penn, such as "Hook up","Open relationship".... At first I thought that is REDICULOUS! NONSENSE!! But recently I don't think it strange as I did before.
Does this mean that I became all to used to American Culture?? Or is it because I am studying Abnormal Psychology and learned so many abnormal cases, these thoughts seems to be not a big deal compared to serious anxiety and disorders?
At first I had a petit culture shock when I attended my seminar. The class was talking about contraception, and they were seriously talking about the best innovative form of birth control.
"Condoms? That is beaten track!!" (Sure, at Penn there are free condoms everywhere.)
"Withdrawal was thought as the best way, which does not sound very fun to me." (Our professor actually said that!!!)
I thought Japanese will never discuss about this kind of topic seriously. They are conservative and shy. It is not that Japanese don't have interest in sexual issues, it is just that they hide it. So, at first I hesitated in the huge difference of Japan and America. But it has been almost 3months after I arrived at Penn. And I am totally fine, sometimes laughing pretty hard to these OPEN mind discussion.
So, today's topic in Abnormal Psychology was Sexual and Gender Identity Disorders Because Thanksgiving break starts from the end of tomorrow's class, there were less students than usual. Our teacher said,"Thanks for coming to class in such a day, guys. We are talking about sex today so be ready." The entire class room burst into laughter.
There was a slide that was very interesting, so I will copy exactly the same words from it.
Murphy's Law (About sex)
* Nothing improves with age
* Don't do it if you can't keep it up
* Sex is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get. (I love this quote because I love chocolates!)
* Sex is dirty only if it's done right
* Sex has no calories
* Sex takes the least amount of time and causes the most amount of trouble
* There is no remedy for sex but more sex
* Never sleep with anyone crazier than yourself
I was impressed with the guy who thought of these things!!
The teacher made a funny comment on one of the explanation above. "Sex has no calories?....Well, though it depends, right??"
If this was back in my university, will the class room burst into laughter??? In the Human Sexuality class back in Japan, every one was soooo quiet trying not to laugh at the teacher's very very serious comments about sex. They just thought sex should not be discussed seriously in academic lecture. But who said that?
How to deal with sex matter in academic field...
There seems to be a huge cultural difference between America and Japan. I am surely learning that from this studying abroad experience.
